MUSIC AS DIPLOMACY #5 THE SHAPE OF LISTENING: FROM THE LINE TO THE CIRCLE
The morning after Eliza Marshall’s Dolby Atmos listening evening, I took my glasses off for the first ten minutes of my walk.
It was about the feeling of removing a barrier, however slight or perceived. It took me back to the night before.
Before we listened to Eternal Birth, everyone turned off their phones. Not silent. Off. Thick black curtains were drawn around us, the lights went down and the music unfolded beside us, behind us and above us.
Someone said afterwards that it felt like live music in the way live music should feel. Like sitting around a campfire.
That image has stayed with me.
We so often present music in a line: musicians on a stage, audiences in rows and speakers sending the sound towards us. What happens when the line becomes a circle? And what conditions can we create to help people truly listen?
I’ve written more about the evening, the album and the active art of listening on Substack.

I would love to know what helps you truly arrive inside music.
