Reg Meuross – The White Rose Tour in and around Cape Town 18-25th August 2017
Singer songwriter Reg Meuross is back in the Wester Cape for the third time, at selected venues in and around the Cape Town.
The ‘White Rose Tour’ satellites around an event at The Cape Town Holocaust Centre on 24th August. The Centre invited Reg to come over from England to talk and perform to high school students in the Western Cape at the award ceremony day of their annual White Rose Art & Writing Project. Reg will talk about songwriting and art as a means of peaceful protest and will perform songs including his acclaimed ‘For Sophie (This Beautiful Day), about the extraordinary bravery of anti-nazi activist Sophie Scholl who was executed after she was caught distributing anti-nazi leaflets during WW2.
“Our hope is that the project will facilitate a greater understanding of the need to protect human rights and freedom of expression.” says the Centre. “This song is beautiful and moving, it’s the best way to honour Sophie Scholl and the young people who stood against social injustice even in the face of death. Young South Africans will have another opportunity to not only engage and appreciate this difficult subject but to also embrace a spirit of activism within their communities.”

Reg is a true modern troubadour, from gigging in village halls and folk clubs to playing the Royal Albert Hall and intimate as well as huge festival stages in the UK and abroad, he consistently entrances his audiences with songs of life, love and injustice, soulfully delivered with melodic tenor vocals and exemplary guitar playing. Reg’s latest album Faraway People comments bravely on life as he sees it commenting courageously on the world we are living in now, from the ravages of austerity to the injustices of racism and the plight of refugees. He also delves into history, echoing warnings that resonate through the decades and are still relevant today. Stories told include people from living memory such as Sophie Scholl, and Michael Brown (victim of the fatal Missouri shooting in 2014) as well as ancient history (Cicero) and even a fictitious meeting between two of the artist’s greatest heroes. Amongst the protest there is beauty, love and humour and some of the most beautifully disarming lyrics ever written.
“There’s something special about the way he writes and delivers a song” Townes Van Zandt.
“Time and again, Reg proves himself one of the key songwriters of our age” David Kidman, Fatea Magazine.
“One of the most talented storytellers of our generation” Pennyblack Music
“Powerful and moving songwriting” Martin Chilton, The Telegraph
“A mighty songwriter and an equally fine singer” Martin Carthy
